Google Search Console
Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that helps website owners monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot their site's presence in Google Search results.
§ 1 Definition
GSC is the most important free SEO tool in existence. It provides direct data from Google about your site's performance: which queries drive impressions and clicks, which pages are indexed (and which are not), crawl errors, security issues, Core Web Vitals, manual actions, sitemap status, and links. If you only use one SEO tool, use this one.
§ 2 Key GSC Reports
Performance report: queries, clicks, impressions, CTR, average position. URL Inspection: check index status of any URL. Index coverage: which pages are indexed, excluded, or have errors. Core Web Vitals: real-user performance data. Links: top linked pages and linking sites. Manual actions: penalty notifications. Sitemaps: submission and status of XML sitemaps.
§ 3 GSC vs Third-Party Tools
GSC data is authoritative (it comes from Google). Third-party tools estimate based on sampling. Always validate third-party tool findings against GSC. But GSC is backward-looking (it shows what happened, not what will happen). Combine GSC with a keyword research tool and rank tracker for a complete picture.
§ 4 Note
- GSC is the most important free SEO tool
- Provides authoritative, direct-from-Google data
- Combine GSC with other tools for a complete SEO picture

## Key GSC Reports
**Performance report**: queries, clicks, impressions, CTR, average position. **URL Inspection**: check index status of any URL. **Index coverage**: which pages are indexed, excluded, or have errors. **Core Web Vitals**: real-user performance data. **Links**: top linked pages and linking sites. **Manual actions**: penalty notifications. **Sitemaps**: submission and status of XML sitemaps.

GSC data is authoritative (it comes from Google). Third-party tools estimate based on sampling. Always validate third-party tool findings against GSC. But GSC is backward-looking (it shows what happened, not what will happen). Combine GSC with a keyword research tool and rank tracker for a complete picture.
## Note
GSC data is not real time. There is a 1-3 day delay in most reports. Performance data is sampled when the query count is high. And 'Average Position' in GSC is not the average ranking across all queries for a page; it is the average of the top ranking across all queries.
## Key takeaways
- GSC is the most important free SEO tool
- Provides authoritative, direct-from-Google data
- Combine GSC with other tools for a complete SEO picture
