Google's Helpful Content System is a ranking mechanism that rewards people-first content and demotes content written primarily for search engine rankings.

Originally launched as the Helpful Content Update in August 2022, the Helpful Content System was integrated into Google's core algorithm in March 2024. It is no longer a separate update you can track. It is baked into every ranking decision. The system evaluates content against the question: 'Does this page provide genuine value to a human reader, or was it written to manipulate search engines?'
§ 2 People-First vs Search-First Content
People-first content answers real user questions, demonstrates first-hand experience, provides unique value, and leaves the reader satisfied. Search-first content exists to rank for query patterns: keyword-stuffed, thin, AI-generated without human oversight, or aggregated without added value. The Helpful Content System aggressively demotes search-first content.
§ 3 Recovering from Helpful Content Demotion
If your site has been hit: audit all content against the 'people-first' question. Remove or rewrite thin, AI-generated, or aggregation-only pages. Demonstrate expertise and experience. Publish content with unique insight, original research, or first-hand knowledge. Recovery takes months, not weeks. Google has stated that removing affected content can help recovery.

Many site owners misinterpreted the Helpful Content System as 'AI content is always bad.' It is not about how content is created. It is about whether the content serves a user need.
